When will the Olympics take place?

The 2024 Olympics will run from Friday 26th July to Sunday August 11th, bookended by opening and closing ceremonies. Some events, such as rugby, handball and football, will kick off slightly earlier (24th July to be exact), with the bulk of the events kicking off from the 27th.

Must-see Olympics 2024 moments

The Paris Olympics will play host to 32 different sports. These range from traditional track and field classics to more modern additions like skateboarding. Here’s a look at the must-see events to maximise your viewing experience on Connect Fibre TV!

The opening ceremony

Pageantry is as much part of the Olympics as the athletic feats themselves. This year’s opening ceremony will be a historic one, as it will be the first of its kind not to take place in a stadium. Instead, it will be held on the Seine with each nation’s delegation paraded on boats, before settling in view of the Eiffel Tower.

Connect Fibre TV will flawlessly showcase this one-of-a-kind event live and up close. It’s set to start at 8:24pm (20:24, see what they did there?) with a theatrical spectacle focusing on the story of Paris. Think theatre, dance, circus and opera. It’ll be worth catching, that’s for sure!

100m sprint final

Often dubbed ‘the race of the century’, the 100m sprint ranks among the most eagerly anticipated events. Years of training and preparation go into a 10 second (at most) battle of the fastest. It’s a breathataking, blink-and-you-miss-it display of athletic prowess that you can see on the 4th of August.

Team GB’s hopes rest on the young shoulders of breakout star Louis Hinchcliffe. He’ll be rubbing shoulders with the fastest athletes in the world and hoping for a podium finish. Don’t miss it!

Artistic gymnastics finals

The artistic gymnastics finals showcase the ultimate in athletic prowess, precision, and teamwork. It’s a thrilling event where every flip, twist, and landing counts. Teams perform across various apparatus, including the vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor, each requiring a unique set of skills and strengths.

The finals will take place on the 29th and 30th July with Team GB well-represented in both the men’s and women’s fields.

Cycling road race

Taking place on the 3rd of August, the cycling road race is always a must-see. Lizzie Deignan is making history as the first female British cyclist to compete at four Olympic games, while the likes of Steve Williams and Tom Piddock will be pedalling for gold in the men’s division.

10m diving platform final

Watch on 6th August as divers perform complex routines from great heights, combining athletic skill with artistic impression. Keep an eye out for Tom Daley as he strives for a career-best performance, and other hopeful Kyle Kothari, Noah Williams and Lois Toulson.

Weightlifting

No event encapsulates the superhuman feel of Olympians quite like weightlifting. See awe-inspiring lifts and displays of strength and technique with finals starting from 7th of August. In the women’s division, Team GB’s Emily Campbell is looking to go one better than her impressive silver medal at Tokyo 2020.

400m hurdles

Another iconic Olympic event, the 400m hurdles finals take place on the 8th of August. Team GB’s Jessie Knight is in with a shout having shown promise, although she’ll be locking horns with the current world record holder, USA’s Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.

Decathlon

The decathlon is a two-day event that tests athletes' versatility and stamina across 10 different track and field disciplines. With the finals taking place 3rd of August, Team GB’s Ashley Bryant is one to watch, given his all-around abilities. This could be his time to shine.
